Are You Letting Great Ideas Slip Away?

Ideas have a way of showing up at the most unexpected times. You might be walking, waiting in line, or driving your car when a thought worth saving pops into your mind. If you don’t capture it quickly, chances are it will slip away. That’s why building a simple system for catching ideas on the go is one of the best steps you can take to boost productivity.

The first key is convenience. You need tools that are always within reach. For many people, the easiest option is their phone. A notes app, voice memo, or quick text to yourself can store the thought instantly. If you prefer writing by hand, keep a pocket notebook or small stack of index cards with you. The goal is speed. Don’t worry about making the idea polished—just get it out of your head before it disappears.

Another helpful habit is setting aside a consistent place where these raw notes end up. If you scatter them across apps, scraps of paper, and emails, they’ll get lost. Instead, choose one “home base” for your ideas, whether it’s a digital app like Evernote or a physical notebook. At the end of the day, review what you captured and move the good ideas into your main system for tasks and projects.

Finally, practice writing down more than just the thought itself. Jot a few words about the context—why it mattered to you, or what sparked it. This extra detail makes it easier to reconnect with the idea later.

Here’s what  I’ve learned about capturing ideas while on the go.
