Books I’ve Been Reading

Some of the best books I’ve read were recommended by friends. I try to return the favor. A while back, someone suggested I share what I’m reading here on my blog

By the way, I don’t get paid to read or recommend books. I buy them myself or check them out from the library. The opinions are all mine.

Here is what I read during June 2025:

Alaska’s History: The People, Land, and Events of the North Country

By Harry Ritter

Alaska’s history is full of struggle, survival, and big change. The land is huge, twice the size of Texas, and full of natural riches. But it’s harsh. As Harry Ritter writes in the book, “Alaska’s History: The People, Land, and Events of the North Country,” “People’s efforts to wrest a living from the region’s vast natural riches despite its extreme conditions” shaped everything. Lots of good stories in this book. Read My Summary Here.

Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s Open AI

By Karen Hal

The headlines track the latest developments of artificial intelligence, but the book, “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s Open AI,” focuses on the personalities and conflicts that led to its early development, especially with its visionary Sam Altman. The book is well-reported and will be of interest to anyone who is tracking the past, present, and future of AI. Read My Summary Here.

Super-agency: What Could Possibly Go Right with Our AI Future

By Reid Hoffman

A lot of people are worried about AI. They think it might take jobs or cause harm. But the book, “Superagency: What Could Possibly Go Right with Our AI Future,” Authors Reid Hoffman and Greg Beato flip that idea. They believe AI can be a tool to help us, not replace us. They encourage us to think of AI like a partner. It can make your work better and help you make smarter choices. Like a GPS for your brain. Instead of doing the thinking for you, it gives you better info so you can decide for yourself. Read My Summary Here.

Why Taiwan Matters: A Short History of a Small Island That Will Dictate Our Future

By Kerry Brown

For many years, we have read warnings of China’s ambitions for Taiwan and what military action would mean for the region, the US, and the world.  Kerry Brown, an expert on China who has written 20 books on the subject since 2006, provides an excellent primer on the history of Taiwan and its likely future. It adds context to the headlines we read today and will likely hear about in the future. Read My Summary Here.
