How Better Onboarding Can Reduce Turnover in Public Media

Despite recent layoffs in public media, staff turnover is a common complaint. One reason may be that we do a poor job onboarding new hires, ensuring they feel supported and prepared to thrive in their roles.

One idea is to improve onboarding by incorporating mentorship programs, which provide invaluable guidance and support for new hires. The combination of structured onboarding and mentoring can significantly improve employee engagement, retention, and productivity, contributing to personal and organizational success.

Traditional one-on-one mentorship provides in-depth, personalized support, while reverse mentorship allows younger employees to share new perspectives with senior staff, particularly in areas like technology. Group mentorship can offer a broader range of insights more cost-effectively, and virtual mentorship programs are increasingly popular as stations embrace hybrid and remote work models. Peer-to-peer mentorship fosters camaraderie and strengthens team dynamics, while sponsorship programs can be vital for underrepresented employees, offering them advocacy and career development.

Stations must define clear objectives and guidelines to establish a successful mentorship program. The best steps are identifying the skills employees need to develop, the outcomes they aim to achieve, the metrics to measure success, and selecting the right mentors with the experience and the passion to guide others. Providing mentors with incentives, such as professional development opportunities or recognition, can help ensure their commitment. Clear communication and flexibility are also important, as the program must adapt to different employees’ needs.

A well-designed onboarding and mentorship program invests in employees’ growth and the station’s success. Organizations can create a supportive environment that fosters career development, job satisfaction, and long-term success by continuously measuring its impact, gathering feedback, and adjusting the program.
