| The American Psychological Association estimates that 20 percent of American men and women are “chronic procrastinators. Jeffery Combs, the author of “The Procrastination Cure,” calls it “an epidemic.” If you feel that you can’t stay on task and get easily distracted there are some things you can do to help yourself become more productive. You might want to find an accountability partner. If a colleague or friend is aware of what you need to accomplish each day, they can check in with you to see if you are on task. Set up a reward system. If you fail to get your work done, you owe your partner lunch. Use a to-do list and decide each morning what 3-5 things you will get done on that day. Eliminate distractions from your workplace. If the internet tempts you, turn it off temporarily. On a Windows computer, go to control panel navigate to the Network and Internet and then open the Network and Sharing Center option and turn it off. On a Mac, click the wireless icon at the top of your screen, and turn wi-fi off. Or unplug your router. If you are a procrastinator, remember that the longer you postpone a task, the more urgent it will become. |
