A survey from the Pew Research Center shows only 48% of U.S. workers say they use all their allotted vacation days each year.
- 49% of Americans say they fear more time off would make them fall behind at work
- 43% say they feel bad that their coworkers take on more work while they’re gone on vacation
- 19% of workers say they fear they’ll lose out on promotions by taking time off, while another 16% say they feel their job may be in jeopardy
- 12% of workers say their managers discourage taking time off
I’m not one of them. OK, I am self-employed, but I have clients and important projects on the horizon. But even when I worked a regular 9 to 5, I always took time off. Because I knew it was important to clear my brain. Get a change of scenery. Eliminate stress. And I instinctively knew that as soon as I got back to work, I would have more energy and a fresh outlook on the tasks that needed to be done.
So, I’m taking my own advice. we are leaving for a wonderful vacation that we have planned for many years with my daughter and her family. We were fortunate enough to vacation with my son and his family a few months ago. So that’s two vacations this year. And there may even be more!
If you have vacation time pending, I encourage you to use it. I also suggest that you see this post in which I discuss the real benefits of taking time away from work
Aloha.
